Evans Countian awarded for arson tip

Randy Bishop, consultant with Georgia Arson Control Board, and Claxton Fire Chief Harold Rogers presented a check Monday afternoon to an individual who provided information regarding an arson fire that occurred in Evans County in 2010. The information provided by this individual, who wishes to remain anonymous, assisted in the conviction of three people regarding the brick home fire that was deliberately set for the purpose of committing insurance fraud.  The home owners, Randall and Darlene Williams, plead out and did not face trial. Randall Williams was sentenced to five years suspended sentence and 15 years probation for charges of insurance fraud and arson. Darlene Williams was sentenced to five years probation for charges of insurance fraud. Justin Roundtree was sentenced to 15 year probation and a $1,000 fine for charges of arson in the first degree. A total of $2,500 was awarded to the informant for assistance in the investigation. Dan Mealor was the state fire marshal who conducted the arson investigation. The amount awarded to informants by the Georgia Arson Control, Inc. is based on the vitalness of the information they provide and the risk factor. No informant is awarded more than $10,000 through the program. To report an arson tip call the arson hotline at 1800-282-5804.
