50 YEARS AGO

----Something new has been added to Claxton industry with the announcement this week by Ira S. Womble Sr. of a new bakery product now ready to be marketed.
----After years of experimenting, Mr. Womble has perfected a pecan pound cake for canning. The cakes are put in special enamel key-opened-cans made by the American Can Co. They are vacuum sealed and will keep fresh indefinitely, Mr. Womble said.

----The Claxton Lions Club has purchased approximately 5 acres and leased an additional acre at a site near McDougald’s Pond north of Hagan as the site for a clubhouse and recreational center, it was announced today by club president Frank Laws.

40 YEARS AGO

----The Rev. L. Perry McNeal, a native of Evans County and a noted civic and religious leader and a Gospel Preacher will be installed as pastor of Jerusalem Baptist Church in Savannah Sunday, May 12, at 4 p.m.
----He is the third pastor of Jerusalem Baptist Church since its organization in 1908. The church is located on the West side.

----Sandra Jane Kicklighter of Claxton, and David Arley Todd, of Claxton will exchange wedding vows July 28 at 4 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Claxton.

Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Cribbs of Claxton announce the birth of a daughter, Sonja Denise, on May 3 at Memorial Hospital in Savannah.

30 YEARS AGO

---]Three Claxton High School seniors have been awarded prestigious local scholarships, according to announcements made this week.
---]The three, Steve Hendrix, James Brewton and Janet Nichols all of whom plan to attend Georgia Southern College in Statesboro next fall, were awarded the local scholarship, which are given each year at this time.

---]Clifton L. Tippins, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eldred Tippins of Claxton, has been assigned to the Tampa, Florida Field office of the FBI as a special agent. Tippins, a 1971 graduate of Claxton High School, received an accounting degree from the University of Georgia in 1975.
