Boy in a Bubble
Actually, that’s a “Human Hamster Ball” that Malik Shareef, 8, is seen rolling around in with help from college-age volunteer Troy Boggs last week during the Camp STARS game day at the Church Street Center. A company called Games 2U brought the ball, laser tag and other games to be enjoyed by the 62 children in kindergarten through eighth grade who are attending the five-week summer day camp put on by Evans County Resource CDC. |

For fireworks, go west or north
7/2/2009
At least two events in easy driving distance offer a real blast on the Fourth of July, with activities during the day leading up to fireworks after nightfall. The Reidsville Fire Department teams up with other community organizations to put on a fun-filled independence Day at Gordonia Alatamaha State Park in Reidsville. Activities begin with a kids’ fishing rodeo, with registration at 9 a.m. and fishing to start at 10 a.m. Children ages 5-15 can participate but must be accompanied by an adult. Prizes are awarded, and lunch will be served for participants. An arts and crafts festival, with food as well, opens at 10 a.m., and entertainment, including a lineup of local singers, starts at 1 p.m. Games for children ages 4-12 open at 5 p.m., including seed spitting, bubble gum blowing, Hula Hoop and a surprise or two. Fireworks will start over the park pond at “dark thirty.” (Sun sets at 8:42.) The Reidsville Fire Department asks for donations to help fund the show. Meanwhile, Mill Creek Regional Park, on Georgia Highway 24 in Statesboro, will hold its Firecracker Fest from 4 p.m. until 11 p.m. Activities include interactive games, the frog jump, the greased pole climb, karate demonstrations and a sandwich eating contest. Bands slated to perform include 300 Miles and Maurice Williams & the Zodiacs. The fireworks start some time after dark.
