The entire student body and faculty at the Bellville Academy totaled some 60 people, an impressive count considering that the school was constructed in 1890. The photo above is believed to have been taken the year that the structure was built by Simon Hearn and Wiley Rowe. Notations indicate that the upstairs level of the school house was used for Sunday school and church services, although it does not state the name of the church or denomination. This photo is provided courtesy of Emily Groover of Bellville, Ga. If you have historical photographs that you would like to share, please call The Claxton Enterprise at 912-739-2132 and schedule a convenient time to bring them by and have them scanned. The newspaper’s online photo gallery features photographs from our county's past in an effort to help build interest in Evans County's Centennial Observance which will occur in August of 2014. Check our website and the ‘photo gallery’ for historical photos that are being added nearly every week. To submit historical photos about Evans County for inclusion, contact us via email at advertising@claxtonenterprise.com.
