MLK Day celebrated with parade

Historic Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church built this colorful float paying tribute to Dr. King’s ideals.

The float pictured above focused on the local 2015 MLK theme as displayed on the float’s backdrop.

Sparky the fire dog greeted parade watchers from atop a Claxton Fire Department truck.

MLK Day celebrated with parade

Monday proved to be the perfect day for a parade. With clear blue skies, cool weather and a slight breeze, participants and spectators alike enjoyed the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day parade and festivities.
The parade traveled its usual route from Bacon Ford Park to Hwy 301, turned right on James St. to Church St. and concluded at the Evans County Community Center where the annual festival was held.
Ryan Tomblin served as the parade grand marshal and Ruby Dell Baker served as parade marshal.
Tomblin was born, raised and educated in Evans County. He is the son of retired teacher and founding member of the MLK observance committee, Doris Tomblin, and Ron Tomblin, a history teacher in Gwinnett County.  Tomblin graduated from CHS in 1995 and received a Bachelor of Science degree in history from Savannah State University in 2001.
