Police merger concept gets nod by Claxton city council

Claxton Police Chief Dale Kirkland won council support Tuesday night, September 4, for the ‘concept’ of a merger of the Claxton and Hagan departments. Council members approved unanimously the proposed concept that would bring the two departments together as a single law enforcement unit, with each sharing in operational costs.

Hagan city officials were scheduled to meet last Thursday night and consider approval of the concept. (See related story.)

Kirkland and Hagan Police Chief Andy Benjamin first presented a merger proposal to Claxton and Hagan city officials in mid-July.

“We’ve discussed this (merger concept) several times,” Kirkland told the Claxton Council last week. “We’ve talked about it, presented you all some numbers, but the latest (revised) numbers are actually less than the ones we presented before.”
